Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Dunja Mijatović calls for proper documentation and careful preservation of evidence to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Dunja Mijatović visited the suburbs of Kyiv destroyed by Russian troops. This was reported by European Truth.
“The magnitude and severity of the violations of human rights and international humanitarian law that occurred as a result of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine is impressive. The provision of reparation and support for the victims and their families and the administration of justice will be a very difficult but necessary task, ”Mijatović said.
The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights states that the war has had a serious impact on the observance of almost all human rights in Ukraine.
“The names Bucha, Borodianka, Irpin or Andreevka have become a symbol of the horrible actions that took place here. But, unfortunately, their inhabitants are not alone in their suffering. Many more people all over Ukraine who have been subjected to inexplicable atrocities… Every one of them deserves justice and should not be forgotten, “Mijatović stressed.
Mijatović argues that even in times of war, life and human rights must be protected, and international law must always be respected: responsibility for violations of human rights and international humanitarian law is key and requires proper documentation. and careful preservation of evidence to bring those responsible to justice.
“Now it is more important to remember that human rights do not stop during war. It does not fade into the background. Even in time of war, life and human rights must be protected. And, importantly, international humanitarian law must which is respected by all and at all times. The civilian population and infrastructure should not be the target. Both the captured fighters and those apparently wounded and sick should be treated fairly and humanely, “he said.
The human rights organization Amnesty International has confirmed the war crimes of the Russian army in the Kyiv region. We are talking about airstrikes in Borodyanka and extrajudicial executions in other cities and villages, including Bucha, Makarov, Vorzel, Andreevka, Zdvizhovka and other communities.
