President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a video message at Super Bowl 2023.
Unlike the World Cup final in Qatar, the National Football League, which hosts American football competitions, allowed the President of Ukraine to address the audience.
In a video message, Vladimir Zelensky said:
I would like to thank everyone who works for our peace. I am writing to you today as thousands of soldiers are defending our country. And that’s why not in the Ukrainian football league they glorify their sport.
The stadium met Zelensky’s appeal with thunderous applause.
On the night of February 13, Super Bowl 2023 took place in Glendale, Arizona, the main game of the season in American football. Kansas City Chiefs defeated Philadelphia Eagles (38:35).
After Zelensky’s video message, representatives of the Ukrainian American Football Association Yuriy Gundych, Roman Boguslavsky, Denis Polubinsky and Afly Williams were invited to the field. During the match at the stadium, they were honored as Ukrainian American football players who today defend their country with weapons in their hands.
They became honored guests of the match.
Yuriy Gundich is the President of the Ukrainian Amfut League and junior sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Roman Boguslavsky is a player of the Uzhgorod Lumberjacks team and a volunteer. Together they visited the United States at the invitation of George Pataki, the former governor of New York.
Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, seven players from the Ukrainian League of American Football have died.
Roman’s brother Daniil Boguslavsky was also an American football player, but from the first days he signed up as a volunteer and died in the war, defending Ukraine. In Uzhgorod, Daniil’s hometown, one of the streets will be named after him.
The Ukrainian heroes of the Ukrainian League of American Football, who defend our country, were honored,” Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova wrote about this event.
