British intelligence has pointed out why the Russian army is strengthening the defense in Zaporozhye, despite the operational focus on the capture of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. According to representatives of the British Ministry of Defense, the maintenance of defense in the Zaporozhye region is critically important for the Russians.
This is stated in the daily review of the defense department of Britain, published on Twitter.
As of February 7, Russia has further strengthened the defense fortifications in the central part of the Zaporozhye region, in particular near the city of Tarasovka. In addition, as of January 8, Moscow established defense fortifications between the cities of Vasilyevka and Orekhov, Zaporizhzhia region.
Despite the fact that Russia has focused its operational efforts on the central part of Donbass, it remains concerned about protecting the outermost sections of its extended front line, the review says.
The occupiers continued to build defense fortifications in the Zaporozhye and Lugansk regions and deploy personnel.
Recall that the front line of Russia in Ukraine is approximately 1,288 km, of which the length of the front in the Russian-occupied Zaporozhye region reaches 192 km.
A significant breakthrough by Ukrainian troops in Zaporozhye would call into question the viability of the Russian “land bridge” connecting Rostov Oblast and Crimea; Ukraine’s success in Luhansk would further undermine Russia’s proclaimed military goal of “liberating” Donbass.
They added that the decision on which of these threats to prioritize in countering is probably one of the main dilemmas for the Russian military leadership.
