The US Department of Defense announced the details of shooting down another unidentified object in the airspace, which “could pose a danger to civil aviation.”
At the direction of President Joe Biden, and based on the advice of Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and the military leadership, an F-16 aircraft fired an AIM9x missile to successfully shoot down an airborne object flying at an altitude of approximately 20,000 feet in US airspace over Lake Huron, Michigan. Its trajectory and height caused concern, including because it could pose a danger to civil aviation, the Pentagon said.
The US defense department added that the location chosen for shooting down the aircraft made it possible to avoid “impacting people on the ground”, which means “there are no signs that any of the civilians were injured.”
According to the Pentagon, the downed object did not pose a military threat “to something on the ground”, but was dangerous for flights and posed a “threat due to its potential surveillance capabilities.”
Recall, on Sunday, the US military shot down an aircraft over Lake Huron. Earlier, the Pentagon reported that over the territory of the United States recorded the movement of a balloon with tracking equipment – “launched, in all likelihood, in China.” On Feb. 4, the Pentagon said another Chinese spy balloon was flying over Latin America. On the same day, the US shot down a balloon.
