British officials have visited Ukraine, hoping to avoid being overtaken by rivals from Germany and France.
High-ranking representatives of the defense industry of Great Britain and Ukraine are discussing the possibility of launching joint production of weapons and military equipment in Ukraine, reports The Telegraph.
According to the publication, other European defense companies are also conducting similar negotiations with Ukrainian authorities, but British officials have already visited the country, hoping not to be overtaken by competitors from Germany and France.
The newspaper writes that such enterprises will make Ukraine less dependent on Western arms supplies, but military experts also note that such facilities cannot be ignored by the Russian military. “The tank factory is not small. And, frankly, if I were Putin, this would be one of the first places I would destroy,” said Francis Tusa, an independent defense expert.
In addition, Tusa said that Russia may consider the appearance of Western defense enterprises on the territory of Ukraine as a provocation, but he also added that Russian threats are unlikely to affect the final decision of the European country.
The British Ministry of Defense and the Prime Minister’s Office declined to comment on the situation.
Recall that the UK is considering the possible transfer of Harpoon anti-ship missiles or Storm Shadows air-to-surface missiles to Ukraine.
