Canada, backed by the United States, shot down on Saturday a small “cylindrical” object hovering over the northwest of the country at an altitude of about 12,000 meters, as it posed a threat to civil aviation. The operation began after Soft House claimed that China had a “fleet” of spy balloons on five continents. What else is known about the case?
demolition
The “cylindrical” object was shot down by combat aircraft at 15:41 Ottawa time (20:41 GMT) in the central region of the Yukon Territory, northwest of Canadaand about 160 km from the border with USA. Yukon borders Alaska, where U.S. fighter jets shot down another target off the state’s northern coast near Deadhorse on Friday.
According to the statement, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, along with US President Joe Biden, decided to proceed with the demolition.
Trudeau also said US military authorities have been monitoring the site for the past 24 hours.
The object was eventually shot down by an AIM-9X infrared missile launched by a US Air Force F-22 Raptor operating in conjunction with a Canadian Air Force CF-18 under orders from North American Defense Command (Norad).
Along with combat aircraft, the patrol aircraft SR-140 “Aurora” from Canada.
The White House said Biden and Trudeau “trusted NORAD and US Northern Command with a strong and effective partnership and agreed to continue working closely to detect, track and protect our airspace.”
Search and rescue
Canada said that search and recovery work continues on Saturday. This was prevented by “cold wind, snow and little sunlight,” the US Northern Command said in a statement.
“Recovery work is being carried out on sea ice,” the text states, adding that the Pentagon “provided no further details (…) about the facility, including its capabilities, purpose, or origin.”
Shortly after this operation USA reported that it was closing Montana airspace after detecting an object that “could interfere with commercial air traffic”, though reported minutes later that the warning was due to a radar failure.
reactions
Minister of Defense CanadaAnita Anand confirmed the downing and said she did not want to speculate about the object’s origin when asked if it was of Chinese origin.
Anand also noted that the object was similar, though smaller, to a Chinese hot air balloon that USA shot down on February 4 off the coast of North Carolina (USA) after flying over most of the country.
“It would be unwise for me to speculate about the origin of the object at this time,” said the Canadian minister, who asked to wait while the authorities analyzed the data to provide additional information.
diplomatic incident
Last month, a giant balloon flew over the United States carrying electronic material that the Pentagon claims was for spy purposes. Canada And USA, causing a diplomatic incident. China admitted that the device was its own, though it said it was for meteorological purposes and that it had gone off course.
The balloon passed through the airspace of Alaska, Canada and the good part USAprompting the cancellation of a rare trip by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to China.
The balloon, according to Washington, flew over several secret US military installations, some of which have nuclear-type intercontinental ballistic missile silos.
US officials said images of the balloon showed it carried surveillance equipment that could intercept communications, as well as solar panels to power multiple sensors.
