Representative of NATO Secretary General Oana Lungescu said that Jens Stoltenberg wants to leave his post this fall and not be re-elected for a fourth term.

Politico recently wrote that the Alliance, due to the war in Ukraine, wants to extend Stoltenberg’s mandate for another year. He has served as NATO Secretary General since October 1, 2014.

At the same time, senior diplomats told Welt am Sonntag that 30 NATO member countries had reached an informal agreement to extend Secretary General Stoltenberg’s term until April 2024.

Stoltenberg’s mandate has already been extended three times, it takes almost nine years.

His term expires on September 30, but there is allegedly an unofficial agreement among 30 member states that Stoltenberg should continue in office. Such a move should guarantee the stability of the military alliance during the war in Ukraine.
