Turkey has the largest search and rescue team in the world with more than 140,000 people.
The death toll in Turkey’s 10 provinces has reached 18,991. A total of 75,523 people have been rescued. This is what Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, who is in the disaster zone, reports Ukrinform.
According to him, more than 76,000 Turkish citizens were sent to other regions of the country at their request.
Erdogan noted that the destruction affected so many buildings in such a wide area that it did not allow the necessary speed of debris removal to be achieved, even though the world’s largest search and rescue team of more than 140,000 people was gathered.
The President of Turkey added that the work to eliminate the consequences of the earthquake is very difficult, including due to the weather conditions.
“The fact that the region is now experiencing a severe winter season, which we have not experienced for a long time, has become another obstacle for us,” Erdogan said.
He promised that the government would rebuild earthquake-ravaged regions as part of the annual reconstruction plan and provide disaster victims with annual rent assistance. Authorities have already started preparations for construction.
According to Al JAzeera, citing data from Syria’s civil defense and the White Helmets organization, at least 2,037 people died as a result of the earthquake in opposition-controlled areas. At least 1,340 people have been killed in areas controlled by the Syrian government, according to officials.
It was previously reported that the number of victims of the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria was more than 21,700 people.
Recall that strong earthquakes in Turkey and Syria occurred on February 6.
Today it was learned that a Ukrainian woman and her four-year-old son were rescued from the rubble in Turkey.
