Now the country’s authorities are talking to lawyers about the possibility of transferring fighter jets, since the current Cabinet is temporarily appointed and has limited powers.
The Slovak authorities are starting negotiations on the transfer of their MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine at the domestic political level, as well as with the European Commission and Ukraine, the official Slovak agency Teraz reported.
According to Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger, the MiG-29 fighters have been withdrawn from service and Slovakia will not use them in the future.
“These decommissioned MiGs will save innocent lives in Ukraine,” he said.
Heger explained that the European Union could reimburse Slovakia for the planes.
“Every aid we give in this way is paid for by the European Peace Fund,” he added.
The Prime Minister of Slovakia noted that the government is already talking to lawyers about the possibility of transferring fighter jets, as the current Cabinet is temporarily appointed and has limited powers.
At the same time, he sees no problem if it is necessary to amend the Slovak constitution or pass a constitutional law to help Ukraine. According to him, Parliament can and can pass such laws.
Defense Minister Yaroslav Nagy emphasized that it is in Slovakia’s national interest that Ukraine become a democratic and independent country. He drew attention to the danger that Russia would decide to continue moving west.
According to him, the next aid package to Ukraine is still being negotiated, and no final decision has been made yet.
It was previously reported that President Volodymyr Zelensky turned to Heger and asked Kyiv for military assistance.
Also, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that Poland is ready to provide Ukraine with its F-16 aircraft, but this is only possible in coordination with NATO.
