In addition to withdrawing support, a group of congressmen demanded an investigation into how money is allocated in the framework of military, economic and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
A group of Republicans led by a member of the US House of Representatives Matt Geitz registered a “Ukraine fatigue resolution” in which they called for an end to military and financial aid to Kiev and to promote a peace agreement between of Kiev and Moscow. On Thursday, February 9, according to Fox News.
The resolution, co-sponsored by 10 Republicans including Geitz, states that since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the United States has provided more than $110 billion in financial, military and humanitarian aid to Kiev, including more than $27.4 billion in security assistance.
The document lists the military equipment the US has provided to Ukraine since February 2022, and also quotes Pentagon officials as saying that the aid “has severely depleted United States stockpiles, undermining US readiness to battle event.”
Republicans argue that US support for Ukraine is inadvertently adding to the rise in civilian casualties, of which, according to US estimates, there are already 40,000. Instead, they added, the funds should be directed to solving problems within the United States, primarily the immigration crisis.
“We must suspend any foreign aid to the war in Ukraine and demand that all parties to this conflict immediately reach a peace agreement,” Geitz said.
Earlier this week, Biden delivered an address to a joint session of both houses of Congress. He called Russia’s war against Ukraine a challenge for America, which gave an appropriate response and demonstrated its global leadership in defending democracy.
Recall that Biden in his annual speech to Congress promised to support Ukraine as long as necessary.
