State Texasin the southern United States, executed this Wednesday an African-American man sentenced to death for a triple murder, despite the fact that his lawyer claimed that his process was infected racism.
John BallentineThe 54-year-old man was pronounced dead at 6:36 p.m. local time, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
“I thank everyone, I want to apologize for what I did to you badly. Excuse me. I’m ready,” were his last words before receiving lethal injectionnearly 25 years after he was found guilty of shooting three white teenagers in their sleep in the city of Amarillo.
One of them, according to court documents, was the brother of his ex-girlfriend, who disapproved of their interracial relationship and threatened to kill him.
Racist prejudice during the trial?
John Ballentine never denied the facts, but his lawyer Sean Nolan He claimed to have received the death penalty for racist bias during his trial.
In an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, he recalled that the prosecutor dismissed black jurors and accused John Ballentine’s public defenders of “showing racial dislike.”
“Do you know how to spell justified lynching?” Was there a verdict, written on a piece of paper, exchanged between Balentine’s then-lawyers, which refers to murders committed in the segregationist South of the United States against the black population.
Sean NolanBalentin’s new defender also claimed that the chairman of the jury himself was a racist who considered blacks dangerous.
He was a former soldier hostile to African Americans who “intimidated” other jurors into accepting the death penalty.
