Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) is apparently not happy that Joe Biden accurately cited his proposal to expire Social Security and Medicare in his State of the Union address on Tuesday.
During the speech, Biden said that “some Republicans” have a plan to “repeal” all federal laws every five years, so Congress must repeatedly authorize funding for everything, including Social Security and Medicare.
Biden did not mention Scott by name, but the Florida Republican took to Twitter on Wednesday to say that Biden “rambled on for a while but apparently forgot to share the facts.
Then he plunged into a long argument in which he undermined what he actually proposed, mainly because he’s not even popular among his fellow Republicans.
Scott says his plan is to just do oneThe federal law will collapse or risk collapsing if it is not reauthorized within five years, and he added, in bad faith, “If a law is worth upholding, Congress can pass it again.”
The senator said the plan is “meant to fix ALL the crazy new laws our Congress recently passed” and supports”to suggest that this means I want to cut Social Security or Medicare is a lie and a disingenuous move … from a very confused president.”
Despite his denials on Twitter, Scott has supported cuts to Social Security and Medicare in the past, as evidenced by this May exchange with Fox News host John Roberts.
Scott received some praise for his tweet, but it was from people who appreciated him speaking out about Republican plans to destroy the safety net.
