On Monday, inmates rioted at a prison in northwest California. Syriaafter the earthquake, which also affected Turkey, and at least 20 people fled the center, which is mainly home to members of the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, a prison source told AFP.
Military Police Prison in the city of Rajo, near the border with Turkeyhas about 2,000 prisoners, of which 1,300 are suspected of being members of IS, the source said.
It also has prisoners from the Kurdish forces.
“After the earthquake, Rajo suffered and the prisoners started to rebel and took control of part of the prison,” said an official at the prison controlled by pro-Turkish groups.
“About 20 prisoners escaped (…), they are believed to be IS militants,” he added.
Earthquake in Turkey and Syria
The source said a 7.8 magnitude earthquake followed by dozens of aftershocks caused damage to the prison, with cracks in the walls and doors.
At least 1,444 people died in Syria on Monday after a devastating earthquake hit southwestern Turkey, according to government and rescue officials.
At least 733 people have died and more than 2,100 have been injured in rebel-held areas in the northwest, according to a White Helmets rescue team.
The situation in prisons
The incident in Rajo followed the December attack by ISIS on a security complex in Raqqa, where they managed to free several jihadists from a prison there.
During the assault, six Kurdish security forces that control the area were killed.
The conflict in Syria began in 2011 after a violent crackdown on peaceful protests and escalated with the involvement of foreign powers and international jihadists.
Nearly half a million people have been killed and the conflict has forced almost half of the country’s population to flee their homes, many of whom have taken refuge in Turkey.
