MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan mocked Republican leaders for their fear and devotion to Fox News host Tucker Carlson, the far-right conspiracy theorist who increasingly defines the party’s agenda.
Hasan said he often disagrees with “serial liar” Boris Johnson, who last week said he was “amazed and shocked” by how “intimidated” the GOP was by Carlson.
“What’s wrong with this guy?” asked the former British prime minister incredulously.
“It’s hard to disagree with that sentiment from Boris,” Hasan told fellow MSNBC host Ayman Mohyeldin.
Hasan dismissed Carlson as a “bow-tie-wearing former frozen food heir and host of a late-night power hour on Fox.”
Yet the GOP “lives in fear” of him.
“Tucker Carlson is basically setting the GOP agenda now for everything from Ukraine aid to green M&Ms. He sets the tone, he decides the official enemies every night and you don’t dare criticize him or displease him if you have an R next to your name,” she said. “It’s kind of crazy. A bit embarrassing, isn’t it?”
Mohyeldin agreed, saying how much the GOP fears it is “beyond embarrassing,” then played a clip of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) walking past Carlson as an example.
“The party that prided itself on resisting communism and the USSR now lives in fear of two privileged whites: Donald Trump and Tucker Carlson,” Mohyeldin said.
