The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is gathering evidence and proof in Ukraine of violations committed during the Russian aggression that could be identified as war crimes. This was stated by High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet at a UN Security Council meeting on Thursday, May 5, Ukrinform wrote.
Thus, Michelle Bachelet said at a UN Security Council meeting that the commission continues to review allegations of violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law. In the context of Russia’s armed attack on Ukraine, many of these allegations are related to violations that can be identified as war crimes.
“Many of these allegations are related to violations that could be identified as war crimes,” he said.
We are talking about many cases of deaths of civilians, especially due to attacks on a hospital, a drama theater in Mariupol, a railway station in Kramatorsk, residential areas in Odessa, etc.
Bachelet added that his team visited Bucha, where they recorded numerous facts of civilian deaths, executions of men, rape of women, kidnappings, and spoke to victims and witnesses of violations in the area.
Most of the deaths, he said, were caused by heavy artillery shelling, multiple launch rocket systems, rocket and air strikes, and in some areas snipers shot civilians.
Bachelet recalled that even on the day of UN Secretary-General António Guterres ’visit to Kyiv to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky, two rockets were fired at the city, in which a journalist was killed.
The High Commissioner noted that the numbers of civilian casualties published by the OHCHR daily are underestimated, as data from the battlefields are received with considerable delay.
We remind you, London will allocate 45 million pounds to help the victims of the war.
It was also reported that settlers would receive additional compensation through the UN program.
