Iran has released director Jafar Panahi on bail after nearly seven months in jail.

Famous Iranian director Jafar Panahiimprisoned for almost seven months in Iran and recently started hunger strikehe was released on bail.

The filmmaker was arrested a few months before the current mobilization against the regime began, but his imprisonment has become a symbol of the crackdown on artists who criticize the government.

Panahi, whose films have won awards at various European film festivals, was released “two days after the start of the hunger strike,” the New York-based NGO Center for Human Rights in Iran tweeted.

His wife Tahere Saidi posted on Instagram an image of him sitting in a car near the prison.

“Panahi has been temporarily released from Evin Prison thanks to the efforts of his family, respected lawyers and film industry representatives,” the Iranian Film House, an association of film industry professionals, said in a statement.

The hunger strike caused consternation throughout the world.

“I will remain in this state until, perhaps, my lifeless body is released from prison,” Panahi said in a statement released by his wife after the director went on a hunger strike on Wednesday.

The 62-year-old director was arrested on July 11 and was due to serve a six-year prison sentence, handed down in 2010 after being found guilty of “propaganda against the system.”

But on October 15, the Supreme Court overturned the verdict and ordered a new trial. His lawyers then thought there was a chance to release him.
