The working group on the creation of a special tribunal for Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, in addition to Finland and Ukraine, was joined by 19 states and the EU’s foreign service.
Finland has joined a group working on creating a special tribunal for Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of the Finnish government.
On February 2, 2023, Finland joined the group created to support Ukraine in holding Russia accountable for the crime of its aggression.
The group, apart from Finland and Ukraine, was joined by 19 states and the EU Foreign Service.
“Supporting and strengthening the rules-based world order is one of Finland’s foreign policy priorities. Russia’s aggression in Ukraine is a flagrant violation of the UN Charter, which emphasizes the importance of protecting international law. War crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and the crime of aggression are the most serious international crimes that affect the entire international community and threaten international peace and security,” the Finnish government said.
Major investigations into war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Ukraine are reportedly ongoing both domestically and internationally, and Finland is supporting investigations conducted by the International Criminal Court and specialists in Ukraine.
“Russia’s responsibility for the illegal aggression in Ukraine and its consequences will not be complete if the crime of aggression is not focused on. Finland wants to help Ukraine find the most effective way to bring the perpetrators to justice, ” said Foreign Minister Pekka Gaavisto.
