Canadian MPs have called for the resettlement of Muslim Uyghur refugees from the Xinjiang region to Canada within two years.
Canada’s parliament has voted unanimously in favor of a proposal to admit 10,000 Uyghurs who fled China. This was reported on February 2 by Reuters.
It is noted that the passage of the bill does not oblige the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to follow this proposal, but the unconditional support of MPs is likely to force the authorities to act.
The agency recalled that human rights activists accuse China of widespread abuses against Uyghurs, an ethnic Muslim minority living in the western region of Xinjiang, including the widespread use of forced labor in camps.
Beijing has strongly denied the violations.
In 2021, Canada became one of the first countries to recognize the Uyghur genocide in China. Ottawa was also among the states that unsuccessfully tried to hold a debate at the UN last year about human rights violations in Xinjiang.
As reported Correspondent.netin 2021, the US was the first to label China’s actions against Uyghurs in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region as genocide.
