U.S. officials said Wednesday that the storm, which covered southeast New Mexico with snow and ice from southeast New Mexico to West Virginia, has killed at least three people and canceled about 1,900 flights.
The National Weather Service (NWS) explained that a solid core of cold air with temperatures well below normal continues to interact with increasing humidity, creating a vast band of ice.
“This mode will be in effect until Wednesday with the addition of ice, especially in parts of Texas,” the NWS added. “Long and significant storm Ice continues over much of the southern plains.”
stormdubbed “Martha” by the Weather Channel, killed three people in Texas, including a woman who was hit by ice on a road in the city of Eldorado, a man who died when his car drove off a bridge in Arlington, and another who died as a result collision of 10 cars.
More than 185,000 homes and businesses in Texas, Arkansas and other southern states were without power as of dawn, according to powerhouse.us. Over 174,000 of these users are based in Texas.
The Austin, Texas Police Department said it responded to 215 vehicle collision calls Tuesday.
More than 1,890 flights were canceled this morning, according to Flightware.com, with 750 left at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and another 300 at Dallas Love Field.
State of emergency
Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared a state of emergency, citing “the potential for multiple power outages” and saying street conditions have delayed delivery of goods.
Schools and universities in Arkansas suspended classes or switched to distance learning on Wednesday, including Tech University, the entire Little Rock School District, and the University of Arkansas.
Meteorologists at THV11 station in Little Rock warned that temperatures on Wednesday would remain below 0 degrees Celsius during the day and could drop to 4 below zero Celsius (25 Fahrenheit) at night.
