An underwater volcano, located 6 km east of the island of Apia in the Vanuatu archipelago, last erupted in 2004.
Near one of the islands of the Vanuatu archipelago, an underwater volcano erupted. This was reported by RNZ.
Submarine chief officer Ricardo William said the East Apia submarine volcano has been shaking and spewing steam since early Wednesday, February 1st.
“Volcanic activity increased slightly with eruptions that threw ash 100 kilometers around the volcano under the sea. We advised aviation, as well as ships, to stay away from the eastern region of Apia island,” said the officer.
According to media reports, authorities have asked people to stay away from the coast, as a tsunami is possible due to the volcanic eruption. Other islands around Apia were put on alert.
