Poland wants to reduce the training time for Ukrainian Leopard 2 crews to five weeks.
If we intensify training by increasing the number of instructors, optimizing our time and our weekends, we can train an entire crew in five weeks, Major Maciej Banaszyński, commander of Poland’s Leopard training center, told Reuters.
The standard training period for Leopard 2 is 10 weeks.
The village of Swietoszow in western Poland, close to the German border, is home to one of three Leopard training centers in Europe – the others are in Germany and Switzerland.
The Polish military declined to confirm exactly where the Ukrainian military exercises would take place, but military experts say Świętoszów is a likely location.
It is possible or likely that the training of crews of Ukrainian Leopard 2 tanks will take place in Swietoszow, but other places cannot be ruled out,” said Jakub Pawlowski, military expert and deputy editor-in-chief of Defence24.pl.
A coalition of Western supporters of Ukraine formed in January to provide Kyiv with German-made Leopard tanks, and on January 20, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said that Ukrainian troops would be trained on Leopards in Poland.
