Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has rejected a German request to send ammunition to Ukraine as part of an international effort to help Kyiv fight Russian aggression.
Lula announced his refusal to journalists at a press conference in Brasilia following a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Brazil is not interested in transferring ammunition to be used in the war, Bloomberg quoted the Brazilian president as saying.
According to him, Brazil “does not want to participate in the war, even indirectly.”
We must look for those who can help find peace between Russia and Ukraine,” he added.
Scholz, according to the media, tried to get an agreement from Brazil on the supply of ammunition for the Gepard anti-aircraft guns transferred to Ukraine.
Bloomberg recalls that Lula da Silva has previously criticized President Volodymyr Zelensky, also blaming him for the ongoing war. The Brazilian leader is trying to “portray himself as a mediator in resolving conflicts in a multipolar world, and not an automatic ally of the US and the European Union.”
Lula’s reluctance to condemn Putin “may also be due to the large amount of fertilizer that Brazilian farmers buy in Russia.”
