In Russian Volgograd, Volgograd road signs have been temporarily replaced with Stalingrad signs at all major entrances to the city.
Such actions of local officials are explained by the approaching 80th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union in the Battle of Stalingrad, the Interfax news agency reports, citing the press service of the mayor’s office.
Also this week, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is due to arrive in the city.
Back in 2013, local authorities decided to return the name Stalingrad to the city for ten days a year – on days associated with the key events of the Battle of Stalingrad and Russian military holidays. The nearest such date is February 2 (the day of surrender in 1943 of the last group of encircled German troops).
During the celebration of the anniversary of the victory of the USSR in the Battle of Stalingrad, February 1-2 will also become days off in the Volgograd region. 250 thematic events are planned in the region, including a military parade and fireworks.
