After weeks of hesitation, Berlin decided on Wednesday to send 14 German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and allow other European countries to supply similar tanks to Kiev. The decision to send German tanks to Ukraine was accompanied by a similar decision by the United States to supply the Ukrainian army with American-made Abrams tanks.
In an interview with the Tagesspiegel newspaper on Sunday, responding to his reaction to Kiev’s request for fighter jets, Olaf Scholz made the connection:The question of fighter planes does not even arise. I can only advise against getting into a constant competitive war when it comes to weapon systems“.
Risk of escalation
Thanking Berlin and Washington, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky immediately called for more, including fighter jets and long-range missiles.
In his interview, Olaf Scholz again warns “risk of escalationwith Moscow. “There is no war between NATO and Russia. We will not allow such an escalation.“According to him, it is him.”necessaryto continue talking with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Their last meeting dates back to the beginning of December. “I will talk to Putin again by phone“, he says without specifying a date.
“But of course it is also clear that as long as Russia continues to wage war with relentless aggression [l’Ukraine]the existing situation will not change“, he thinks.
