The whole path of Ukraine’s accession to the EU will be a long process of adaptation, warned
Ukraine’s accession to the EU will not be achieved in the next five to ten years. This was stated by the Austrian Minister for EU Affairs and Constitutional Affairs Caroline Edtstadler, Euractiv reports on Wednesday, May 4.

“The whole path of Ukraine’s accession will be a long process of adaptation, which will certainly not be achieved in the next five to ten years, as some states in the Western Balkans have been waiting decades for the next step,” he says and added that for Ukraine there may be no accelerated procedure.
Edtstadler also commented on a recent statement by Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg, who suggested that Ukraine consider other ways to get closer to the EU, in addition to membership. He explained that Ukraine had heard the denial of EU membership in this statement, but that was not the meaning, and it was not Austria’s position.
“The Foreign Minister also wants to say here that you may also need to be creative in how you introduce Western values to Ukraine,” the minister said.
Austria is one of the few countries in Europe that has refused to provide Ukraine with lethal weapons to fight Russian occupiers. So far, the country has supplied 10,000 helmets, body armor and 100,000 liters of fuel, and has given the Red Cross and other NGOs 17.5 million euros in assistance. The Austrian government is contributing 10 million euros to the World Bank’s assistance program for Ukraine.
Recall that on April 18, Ukraine submitted the first part of the questionnaire for obtaining the status of a candidate for EU membership. Right now, the European Commission is waiting for the second part of the document from Kyiv. The EC relies on two main criteria for Ukraine’s accession to the EU: democracy and market economy.
