Recall that on January 29, Ukraine celebrates the 104th anniversary of the battle near Kruty, which delayed the Bolshevik offensive against Kyiv. In January 1918, near the railway station of Kruty (now Chernihiv region), the forces of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, which had declared independence a few days earlier, tried to stop the advance of Bolshevik troops advancing on Kyiv.
Near Kruty the less prepared link of the Ukrainian army had to repel the forces of the Red Guard: in particular, the Russians were opposed by several hundred Kyiv junkers, as well as students and high school student. After the battle, the Bolsheviks shot 27 (according to some sources, 28) captured youths. Some of them were buried with honor in Askold’s grave in Kyiv in 1918. Today this burial has not been preserved, although a monument to the Heroes of Krut was erected nearby.
