Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany, will continue to communicate with Vladimir Putin over the phone.
The politician stated this in an interview with Tagesspiegel.
Scholz complained about the “impolite tone” of conversations with the head of the Kremlin. But he believes that it is still necessary to negotiate an end to the war with Putin.
I will talk to Putin again on the phone, because this needs to be done. It is Putin who must withdraw troops from Ukraine and end this terrible senseless war. In addition, in the past, we sometimes discussed specific issues of the exchange of prisoners, the export of grain from Ukraine and the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. But it is important for me that the talks always return to the actual topic: how will the world get out of this horrific situation? The premise for this is clear: the withdrawal of Russian troops,” Scholz said.
In another interview, the chancellor said that Germany had adapted to the lack of cooperation with the Russian Federation. In an interview with Latin American media that appeared on the official website of the German government, Scholz said that his country “adapted quickly” to breaking close ties with Russia.
On February 24, 2022, we faced a change of eras, and Germany quickly adjusted to the new reality. A reality where we no longer cooperate with Russia, Scholz said.
However, the Chancellor added that Germany would continue to move towards reducing the “one-sided dependence of the economy” on Russia.
