Moscow ordered Maris Riekstinsh to leave Russian territory within two weeks.
Russia has demanded that Latvia’s Ambassador, Maris Riekstins, leave its territory after Riga downgraded diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation as a sign of solidarity with Estonia. This is what the press service of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday, January 27.
The report says that Latvia’s Charge d’Affaires Datsu Rutka has been summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry over the Latvian leadership’s decision to downgrade Russian-Latvian diplomatic relations.
“It is emphasized that the justification for this step by referring to some kind of “solidarity” with other Baltic countries is not accepted. The “Solidarity” between them is only in something else – in total Russophobia and the desire to initiate hostile measures against Russia, encouraged by the United States and some other unfriendly countries,” the Russian ministry said.
The Latvian lawyer was told that the Russian Federation did not consider it necessary to wait until the date indicated by Riga for the completion of their missions by the ambassadors (February 24), so Moscow ordered the Ambassador of Latvia, Maris Riekstins, to leave in Russia for two weeks.
Russia said Latvia’s “provocative demarche” to downgrade diplomatic relations allegedly “will have consequences.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry also says that all responsibility for the current situation lies with the government of Latvia.
As previously reported, Estonia expelled the Russian ambassador from the country. This was in response to similar actions by the Kremlin on January 23. As a sign of solidarity with Estonia, Latvia announced the downgrading of diplomatic relations with Russia.
We add that Russia has decided to expel the Estonian ambassador. The Russian Foreign Ministry accused the country of “total Russophobia” and “cultivating hatred” against the aggressor country.
