Poland is ready to send 60 modernized tanks to Ukraine. Of these, 30 are PT-91s based on the Soviet T-72M1.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that in addition Ukraine will receive 14 Leopard 2 tanks.
The PT-91 Twardy is a Polish main battle tank based on a variant of the Soviet T-72M1 tank.
Morawiecki stressed that modern tanks are very important for Ukraine now, given that Russia can have from a few to 15 thousand of them.
If we do not want Ukraine to lose, we must be very open and persistent in our support,” added the head of the Polish government.
What is known about the PT-91 Twardy tanks?
The Poles developed them on the basis of the Russian T-72M.
However, a Polish turbodiesel was used as a power plant, giving a speed of up to 70 km / h and a cruising range of up to 650 km.
The tank has reinforced additional armor on the bottom under the driver’s seat. And most importantly, the PT-91 Twardy is equipped with protection using active armor of its own design. This is a significant advantage compared to the same Polish T-72M1 and T-72M1R.
