Ukraine will receive from Belgium AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles for NASAMS, launchers for Mistral air defense systems, small arms and ammunition for it.
This is a record €90m package, equal to the cost of all Belgian aid since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, L’Echo reported.
There are no more tanks in the country’s warehouses, but the Ministry of Defense suggested that they could be bought out in order to eventually be transferred to Ukraine.
Belgium is unable to send tanks to Ukraine, as it removed its Leopard 1 from service back in 2014. The cars were sold to a private company at prices ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 euros per unit. The Belgian government considered the possibility of buying back the equipment, but ran into difficulties, reports “Military”.
AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles can be used as anti-aircraft missiles as part of NASAMS systems. At the end of 2022, the US government authorized the sale of the latest versions of these missiles to Belgium in the amount of $380 million.
The aid package will also include an unnamed number of launchers for the Mistral air defense system, but without missiles, since Belgium does not have them. In this matter, according to journalists, Norway and France volunteered to help the allies.
Belgium will also donate an unknown amount of small arms and ammunition. Part of it will come from the army, the rest will be purchased from the national manufacturer FN Herstal. In particular, SCAR assault rifles. Also, the Ukrainian military will receive machine guns – 5.56 Minimi and 12.7 mm M2.
