Ukraine turned to Estonia with a request to transfer cluster munitions to counter a full-scale Russian invasion.
Estonia wants to transfer cluster munitions to Ukraine, but it needs the permission of the producing country – Germany. On Thursday, January 26, the ERR report.
“Estonia has decided to provide Ukraine with 155 mm artillery ammunition. I do not consider it necessary to discuss the details of the agreements between the armed forces of Estonia and Ukraine, especially regarding the quantity and range of ammunition. If we provide Ukraine with cluster munitions, I see no problem with it, because now both warring parties are using ammunition on the territory of Ukraine,” said Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur.
It should be noted that more than 100 countries of the world have joined the convention on the prohibition and non-proliferation of this type of ammunition, but Estonia and Ukraine are not among them (like the USA, Russia, China, Israel, South Korea and others other countries). Estonia now has cluster shells previously purchased from Germany, but now Berlin refuses to produce and use such munitions.
German-made cluster munitions have remained in Estonia since the 1990s.
Cluster munitions are considered extremely dangerous to the civilian population, if only because the unexploded elements, in fact, become mines and can kill or injure random people.
It was previously reported that the Pentagon was using Israel’s vast stockpile of American ammunition to meet Ukraine’s dire need for artillery shells.
It is known that Estonia managed not only to pay for the weapons transferred to Ukraine, but also to increase its defense capabilities.
