Conservative CNN commentator SE Cupp warned Wednesday how former President Donald Trump could “weaponize” GOP infighting to his advantage in his bid to become the party’s 2024 presidential nominee.
The “Unfiltered” host feared that none of the many Republicans considering a run for the presidency — such as former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — would oh you’re not really ready. to challenge Trump, who declared his candidacy last year.
Trump “will certainly be a weaker candidate than he was in 2016 and 2020, but he just needs a plurality to win the nomination,” said Cupp, who has been a longtime critic of the former president.
The infighting between the candidates, in the Republican National Committee (for his leadership) and in the House GOP (for Kevin McCarthy’s spokesman role) “will only be good for Trump because it will arm him to reward loyalty,” he added.
Still, Cupp suggested it would be “very bad news” for the Republican Party.
“Two more years of pandering to Trump’s affections and a likely Trump nomination will continue to do what he has done for the past six years, weakening the GOP to the point of utter worthlessness,” he said.
