The European Court of Human Rights ruled that the Russian Federation annexed part of Donbass on May 11, 2014.
On Wednesday, January 25, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Russia occupied part of the Ukrainian Donbas on May 11, 2014. The court also announced its decision on the admissibility of the interstate case Ukraine and the Netherlands v. Russia. This is what the head of the Committee on Legal Policy Denis Maslov said on Wednesday, January 25.
This case concerns widespread human rights violations in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Lugansk regions, the abduction and attempts to illegally export orphans to the Russian Federation in 2014, and MH17 flight crash.
According to Maslov, this means the following:
-
the court recognizes Russia’s control over the Donbas and determines the temporary and territorial boundaries of the occupation;
-
since May 11, 2014, the events in Donbas are under the jurisdiction of the court;
-
The ECtHR will continue to consider the case of Ukraine and the Netherlands against Russia on the merits.
“This decision of the ECtHR will be an argument for other trials. And it will help bring the Russian Federation to justice. Every crime of Russia must be proven, and the guilty must be punished,” he explained.
Note that on May 11, 2014, pro-Russian militants announced an illegal “referendum” in Donetsk and Lugansk regions. This was the beginning of the creation of Moscow-controlled DNR and LNR groups.
As previously reported, in Strasbourg, the European Court of Human Rights on Wednesday, January 25, announced its decision on the admissibility for consideration of the interstate case Ukraine and the Netherlands against Russia.
It was previously reported that the ECHR ordered Russia to ensure the rights of captured defenders of Ukraine.
