The film House of Splinters about a Ukrainian orphanage was nominated for an Oscar.
The film co-produced by Ukraine, Denmark, Finland and Sweden is among the nominees for the award in the Best Documentary Feature Film category, the Ukrainian Institute announced on January 24. A total of five entries will compete for the award.
Directed by Simon Lereng Vilmont, the film tells the stories of several children from an orphanage near the front line. Despite the proximity of war and personal dramas in the families of children, the caregivers of the shelter are trying to do everything to create a safe space for their pets, who are awaiting a court decision on their future fate.
They spend nine months in the shelter. Then they either return to their parents, or end up in a boarding school or in a foster family.
Producer Darya Bassel and Victoria Khomenko, as well as line producer and co-director Azad Safarov worked on the film from the Ukrainian side.
The Oscar winners will be named during the awards ceremony on March 12 in Los Angeles.
This is the first time a Ukrainian film and a film about Ukraine has been nominated for an Academy Award.
