Ministers of Foreign Affairs European Union On Monday, they reached an agreement to allocate another 500 million euros from the general fund to finance the supply of weapons to Ukraine, while Kyiv is fighting major battles against Russia in the Donbas. This was confirmed by diplomatic sources. Europe Press.
“A formal decision will be made this week,” the sources said, explaining that the meeting of European ministers served to agree on a new game. This new tranche brings to $3.6 billion the funds provided by the EU for the supply of arms to Kyiv in the context of the war, and is part of more than 11 billion euros that Europe offered as military support to Ukraine.
Hungary threatened to veto the decision, in a new open front in its withdrawal of support measures for Ukraine and increase pressure on Russiabut in the end this was not done, although his spokesman threatened that “it would be difficult to continue to support the country in the future” if the rights of the Hungarian minority in that country were not respected.
“I see that, despite the beginning of the new year, the attitude towards the war has not changed and the same militant atmosphere prevails,” the Hungarian Foreign Ministry said in a statement from Brussels.
As Szijjarto pointed out, peace in Ukraine is needed “as soon as possible”, and he criticized decisions that contribute to the “prolongation” of the war or military “escalation”, contrary to the interests of Budapest. “We do not consider it a good idea to increase the supply of weapons, but we will not interfere with the implementation of the EU decision on this issue,” he assured.
Russia warns
For its part, Russia assured that the British Challenger 2 tanks would “burn down” in Ukraine and would not be able to influence the course of the “special operation” that had begun in that country.
“These tanks will burn like everyone else,” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at his daily press conference. Thus, he referred to the statements of the British Prime Minister, who promised to send 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine.
Ukrainewhich has used T-72 tanks for decades, received over 230 upgraded Soviet tanks from Poland and the Czech Republic, but did not receive a single Western main battle tank.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently received promises of light armored vehicles: 50 Bradleys from the United States, 40 Marders from Germany and AMX-10 radio-controlled units from France, which will arrive in the country in about two months.
