Turkey restricts residence permits for Russians – media

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has not yet commented on the complaints of Russian citizens who have not been granted residence permits in this country.

In particular, the Russian media claimed that since December 26, Russian citizens who left the Russian Federation after the invasion of Ukraine and military mobilization were denied permits for short-term residence for the purpose of tourism in several city.

“We were told that no matter what documents we provide, Russians are no longer given residence permits,” said Russians who have faced similar denials.

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the country’s immigration authorities have not yet commented on this issue.

In 2022, 153 thousand Russian citizens received temporary residence permits in Turkey. Thus, Russians became the largest group among other nationalities to receive this document.

The Turkish Migration Service said that about 86% of residence permits received by Russians were for up to one year. A short-term residence permit for tourism purposes allows visitors to stay in Turkey for up to one year and freely enter and leave the country. The residence permit gives Russians the right to open an account in local banks or send their children to local schools.

Russian citizens without a residence permit are allowed to stay in Turkey only as tourists: the maximum stay is 60 consecutive days within six months.

Turkey has not imposed sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine, as Europe has. Moreover, Russians are allowed to buy property and do business in the country.
