The Haitian Ministry of Health confirmed this Sunday that cholera has claimed lives 490 people since the outbreak in October last year in a Caribbean country. This health crisis is added to the food emergency that this nation is suffering from.
According to the latest official balance released late on Saturday by Haiti Libre, health authorities have confirmed a total of 1,742 cases and are trying to complete a further 24,536 probable cases. The number of people hospitalized with symptoms stands at 20,505 since the announcement of the first case on October 3, 2022.
The median age of those hospitalized in Haiti is 20 years, and the incidence is particularly pronounced among children aged 1 to 9 years, accounting for about 8,200 probable cases.
This health crisis comes at a time of extreme instability, to the point that the Canadian government has announced the transport of armored vehicles to Haiti to deal with the insecurity crisis the Central American nation is facing.
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly and Defense Minister Anita Anand said a few weeks ago that the executive branch was responding to the Haitian government’s request for enhanced security a few weeks ago.
Added to this is the hunger crisis. In this sense, Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced that the country will begin receiving financial support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to respond to the food emergency.
The chief executive said Haiti is one of the first countries to benefit from this program, called the Food Shock Window, which will allow it to implement a “series of social safety nets,” he detailed last week. in a message via Twitter.
Country with constant crises
UN estimated at 4.7 million. Haitiansalmost half of the country’s population suffers food insecurity spicy. Cholera is caused by eating food or water contaminated with a bacterium called Vibrio cholerae.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) operates four 250-bed centers and about twenty oral rehydration clinics, Deputy Chief of Mission Mocha Zemrag told AFP.
One of the priorities, Zemrag said, is to ensure access to drinking water in gang-controlled areas, such as the Brooklyn metropolitan area, which has been without this resource for three months.
The danger of kidnapping by criminal gangs prevents entry into these areas to disinfect homes and buildings with chlorine.
Although Médecins Sans Frontières has set up a transportation system to transport its staff safely to medical centers, fuel shortages threaten to prevent this “in a few weeks,” Zemrag explains.
Concern about the situation of the residents rural areaswho, without access to fuel, have to go for days for help.
