Ukrainian refugees do not know the Finnish laws, so they are deceived. Labor exploitation has become a growing problem.
Ukrainian refugees in Refugees of Finland are increasingly becoming victims of labor exploitation. People want to work as soon as possible, but due to ignorance of Finnish laws, they are deceived, according to the Finnish edition of YLE.
“Ignorance can lead to exploitation, to which the construction sector is particularly susceptible in light of the latest news. The builders’ union has already intervened with Ukrainian workers at seven construction sites. Recently, the this problem arose at the Sulkavuori wastewater treatment plant in Tampere,” the publication reports.
It was noted that last year, 510 people turned to the specialists of the organization Rikosuhripäustys, which helps victims of human trafficking, for help, which is more than twice as many as in 2021. At the same time, fifty cases were recorded in construction sector. Some of them are concerned about Ukrainians.
According to experts, foreigners often do not know their labor rights and do not know where to ask for information or help.
“Often they don’t know which company they signed a contract with and what they agreed to. Employees work long hours. In the worst case, there are no days off or sick days. They are paid less than promised, wages were delayed or fictitious costs were deducted from it,” explained the representative of the organization Rikosuhripäustys Katharina Iskala-Blomster.
The publication states that in construction sites, people of Ukrainian origin are unreasonably retrained as entrepreneurs. Some workers may also charge money for obtaining a residence permit or a separate fee for obtaining it. However, in Finland charging for employment services is illegal.
Earlier, Lithuania warned that scammers were collecting data from Ukrainians. Online swindlers pose as the Department of Migration and offer Ukrainian refugees to fill out a fake questionnaire.
