Former German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht, before resigning, banned the inventory of Bundeswehr tanks in order to delay the government’s response to the supply of Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
Lambrecht resigned on January 16. She explained her decision by “excessive attention to her from the media”, which interferes with work and harms the soldiers.
The refusal to conduct an inventory of the tank units of the Bundeswehr, citing sources, is reported by Business Insider. According to the publication, Lambrecht gave such an instruction a week before her resignation. The ministry was asked to make a count of heavy equipment in order to operate with information on the issue of possible deliveries.
In response, the Lambrecht department allegedly stated that information about the tank count could be interpreted as a readiness to transfer tanks to Ukraine and entail undue pressure on Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Rumors about Lambrecht’s resignation have been around for a long time. Lambrecht’s resignation was made on the eve of a meeting of the Ramstein group, at which the new German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced his refusal to provide Leopards to Ukraine.
