Filipina Maria RezaNobel Peace Prize winner for defending free speech, was acquitted on Wednesday along with her digital media. rapper on charges of tax evasion, the appeals court said.
Maria Ressa, who shared the award with a Russian woman Dmitry Muratov he still faces three more criminal charges in 2021, including a cyber-defamation conviction currently pending, for which he faces seven years in prison.
“Today facts win. Truth wins,” Ressa told reporters in front of a Manila court shortly after the court ruled in her favor on charges that she and rapper evaded taxes in 2015 when selling bonds to foreign investors.
“These accusations were politically motivated.”
The 59-year-old journalist faces a series of charges that press freedom advocates link to her harsh criticism of the former president. Rodrigo Duterte and his war on drugs, which claimed thousands of lives.
Ressa and Muratov received the 2021 Nobel Prize for their efforts to defend free speech.
Asked what the ruling means, Ressa replied, “I hope that’s what it gives us.”

Uncertain future

The constitution states that only Filipinos or Filipino-controlled entities can invest in media in an Asian country.
The case relates to an investment made in 2015 by the US-based Omidyar Network, created by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar.
Subsequently, this network has shifted its investments to rapper local managers of the site to evade Duterte’s attempts to shut it down.
The current President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcossaid in September that he would not intervene in cases against Ressa, citing the separation of the executive and judicial branches of government.
Shortly after Marcos took office last year, Ressa lost her appeal for defamation in cyberspace.
