The relevant bill has already been registered in Parliament. The document provides for a ban on the activities of religious organizations, the leading center of which is located in Russia.
The government has registered in the Verkhovna Rada a draft law that provides for a ban on the activities of religious organizations associated with Russia in Ukraine. This was announced on Thursday evening, January 19, by Taras Melnichuk, a government representative in parliament.
He noted that the bill aims to ensure spiritual freedom, prevent social division along religious lines, promote the integration of Ukrainian society and protect national interests.
The initiator of the bill was the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmygal.
The draft law provides for amendments to the Law of Ukraine On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations, On State Registration of Legal Entities, Individual Entrepreneurs and Public Formations. According to them, the activity in Ukraine of religious organizations, the leading center (management) of which is located outside of Ukraine in a state that is carrying out armed aggression against Ukraine, is not included.
It will be recalled that on December 20, 2018, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on renaming the UOC-MP. It was developed to ensure the security of the state and sovereignty of Ukraine, as well as to provide society with reliable information.
The law states that a religious organization whose headquarters are located in a country recognized as the aggressor must indicate this in its name. Corresponding changes must also be made in the charter of the organization. At the same time, it is allowed to add “in Ukraine” after the full name of the church, indicating the control center.
Then the UOC-MP said that changing the name of the church would be a problem, since it was registered in Ukraine, and not in Russia. And the adopted law was called populist there.
