The Russian Federation did not allow Russia to participate in the annual conference in honor of World Press Freedom Day. In Russia, this is seen negatively, they say we are talking about “cleaning up the field of information.”
UNESCO did not allow Russia to participate in the annual conference in honor of World Press Freedom Day, which is celebrated on May 3. Russian media wrote about it, referring to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
“The UNESCO Secretariat, on behalf of the organizers of the forum, under a very big reason, rejected Russia’s applications for holding a special session on the influence of large IT companies in the work of the media, as as well as expert speeches in panel discussions, “the official communiqué said.
The ministry said the UNESCO secretariat followed the lead of a group of prominent, highly biased countries promoting Russia’s “cancellation” policy in the international arena and aimed to clean up the field of information from points of view. which is different from the ultra-liberal attitudes of the “collective West.”
The agency also noted that the organization has deprived Russian journalists and public figures of the opportunity to discuss issues relevant to the entire international community.
The Russian mission of UNESCO said the rejection of journalists from Russia was becoming a “cabal”.
The UN General Assembly established World Press Freedom Day in 1993. It is designed to remind authorities to protect freedom of information and opinion, to support media outlets facing restrictions, forced closures, fines, and their editors are victims of harassment, illegal arrest and murder. From 2 to 5 May, UNESCO and Uruguay are hosting a conference in Punta del Este on the theme “Journalism under digital siege”. After the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, the head of the country’s Ministry of Culture and Information Policy, Alexander Tkachenko, asked UNESCO to exclude Russia from the organization, as well as change the host country of the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee.
It should be recalled that earlier the 45th session of UNESCO was planned to be held in Kazan, Russia. However, the parties to the 1972 World Heritage Convention signed an open letter refusing to participate in the meeting due to Russia’s systematic violation of international humanitarian law in Ukraine.
UNESCO has included the Crimean Tatar Ornek ornament in the list of intangible cultural heritage.
