Nguyen Xuan Phuc has resigned as head of state over a government corruption scandal, media reports.
Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc has resigned. This was announced on January 17 by the VnExpress portal.
It noted that the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam on Tuesday accepted Phuc’s resignation from the post of president of Vietnam and removed him from the Central Committee and the Politburo of the party “at his own request.”
“Due to his responsibility to the party and the people, he has submitted an application for dismissal from his appointed positions, dismissal and retirement,” the Central Committee said in a statement.
Phuc “made great efforts” to lead the country and fight against COVID-19, however, as head of state, he is responsible for the fact that several officials, including two deputy prime ministers and three ministers, ” have allowed violations that lead to serious consequences,” emphasized the Central Committee.
According to media reports, the president decided to leave office because of the corruption scandal in the government.
It can be recalled that Nguyen Xuan Phuc served as the Prime Minister of Vietnam from April 2016 to April 2021, after which he was elected the country’s president. His term of office will last until 2026.
