A senior Russian official proposed on Friday to confiscate the assets of citizens who leave Russia and criticize the Kremlin’s military campaign in Ukraine.
Since February 24, 2022, hundreds of thousands of people have fled Russia without fear of a future for themselves in this country, fearing prosecution for expressing their disagreement or being mobilized and sent to the front.
“There are scoundrels who live comfortably thanks to our country. From abroad, they rent out their property and continue to receive income to the detriment of Russian citizens. At the same time, they allow themselves to publicly talk about Russia and insult our soldiers and our officers,” he wrote. Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of the Duma, the lower house of parliament.
Therefore, Volorin thought of proposing this measure to his compatriots if they would rule the war when a month remained, so that this war would be a year without a decision. Most of the prominent opponents are in exile or in prison.
“It would be fair to add to the criminal code a clause on the confiscation of property in Russia of these scoundrels (…) in order to compensate for the damage caused,” Volodin suggested.
In recent months, Vladimir Putin’s government has stepped up its crackdown on his detractors, with a crackdown on Ukraine. The authorities have approved a law providing for up to 15 years in prison for any publication of information about the Russian army, recognized as “false”.
Russia has replaced the head of the armed forces
Last Wednesday, Russia replaced the commander of the armed forces that have been fighting in Ukraine since February 2022. Valery Gerasimov, 67, has replaced Gen. Sergei Surovikin, who in November recommended the withdrawal of Russian troops from the Kherson region in northern Ukraine. , is considered the worst setback suffered by Russian forces in the conflict.
By order of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Surovikin will now act as deputy commander of the joint group of forces in the area of the “special military operation.”
The reason for the appointment of Valery Gerasimov is “the expansion of the scope of the tasks being solved and the need to organize closer interaction between the various troops of the Russian Army.”
