Budapest will prevent the European Union from imposing sanctions on Russia’s energy carriers, as it depends on them.
Hungary will veto EU sanctions on Russia’s energy if they limit the country’s ability to import energy resources. On Monday, May 2, Bloomberg reported in connection with the words of Hungary’s Cabinet of Ministers Gergely Gulyas.
“We have clarified that we will not support the extension of European Union sanctions against Russia in the energy sector,” Gulyas said.
The publication, citing sources, states that the EU will propose a ban on Russian oil by the end of the year due to the war in Ukraine, and until then import restrictions will be gradually implemented.
At the same time, Hungary, which is highly dependent on Russia’s energy, is one of the most active opponents of extending sanctions.
“Since such decisions require unity, there is no sense for the Commission to propose sanctions on natural gas and crude that would limit purchases in Hungary,” Gulyas commented on the situation on the air of one of the TV channels.
At the same time, information has emerged today that Hungary, Austria and Slovakia, which until recently blocked oil sanctions, have changed their minds.
Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that in the summer the EU plans to stop imports of Russian coal, and before the end of the year-oil. Also reduce gas supplies.
