The Turkish leader asked Stockholm to extradite 130 “terrorists” to approve an application for NATO membership.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey would approve Sweden’s entry into NATO only after Stockholm extradited 130 “terrorists” to Ankara. The Turkish leader said this at a meeting with young Turks, reported Sunday, January 15, the Anadolu agency.
Thus, Erdogan complained that Sweden did not intervene in demonstrations in support of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which Turkey considers a terrorist organization. He also said that Stockholm allegedly promised earlier, but never extradited 130 Kurdish “terrorists” to Ankara.
“We told them, ‘If you don’t extradite the terrorists who are in your countries, we won’t be able to approve your application for NATO membership in our parliament. They have to extradite about 130 terrorists so that their proposals will pass through our parliament, but, unfortunately, they have not yet done so,” Erdogan said.
He noted that rallies of RKK supporters are regularly held on the streets of Stockholm. The President stressed that Turkey has repeatedly warned the Swedish authorities about its non-acceptance.
Earlier in Sweden they said that they cannot fulfill Turkey’s requirements for joining NATO. At the same time, despite the fact that Ankara’s claims are exclusively related to Sweden, Finland will not agree to the ratification of its accession to be completed separately.
As you know, Erdogan said last November that his country will not approve the official membership of Finland and Sweden in NATO until these two countries take the necessary “steps”.
