Michael Kretschmer believes that Nord Stream needs to be fixed. “The Russian gas issue is not on the agenda while the war is going on,” he added.
The Prime Minister of the federal state of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer, again spoke in favor of repairing the damaged Nord Stream – as a necessary condition for the continuation of Russian gas supplies in the future. Kretschmer expressed the corresponding position in an interview with the Funke Mediengruppe, excerpts from which were published on Saturday, January 14.
“If the damage is not repaired, the Nord Stream will become unusable in the long run,” said the politician. According to him, it is necessary at least to ensure the safety of existing pipes. The operator must ensure that the pipeline can be repaired if necessary.
“The issue of Russian gas is not on the agenda while the war is going on,” Kretschmer stressed. At the same time, Germany must “maintain the possibility of using not only very expensive liquefied natural gas after the war,” he said.
According to the head of the Saxon Cabinet, it is in the national interest to study in which countries the supply of raw materials can be cheaper.
Kretschmer called for public consensus on energy supply
Michael Kretschmer also called for a public consensus on energy supply in the coming decades. “Rising energy prices are taking the oxygen out of businesses across Germany,” he said. According to the politician, the intervention against the crisis by the authorities is the right strategy, but “we cannot solve the problem by separate rash measures” – it is necessary to understand its roots. “In an industrialized country, there should not be a shortage of energy,” he added.
By the end of September 2022, a total of four leaks were discovered in two strings of Nord Stream, and then in Nord Stream 2. Before this, seismological stations in Sweden and Denmark recorded strong underwater explosions in both place
The cause of the damage is being investigated in Germany, Denmark and Sweden. Ann Linde, who served as the Swedish Foreign Minister, stressed that “the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas leaks in the exclusive economic zones of Denmark and Sweden were the result of explosions, probably caused by sabotage.” The sabotage versions follow NATO and EU.
The length of the destroyed section of the Nord Stream is 250 meters
A specially equipped vessel chartered by Nord Stream AG arrived at the site of the gas pipeline wreck in Sweden’s exclusive economic zone on October 27.
In the Nord Stream gas pipeline, the length of the pipe section destroyed as a result of the alleged sabotage is about 250 meters, operator Nord Stream AG reported in November 2022.
