United Kingdom will supply Ukraine with tanks challenger 2 and will become the first country to send Western-made heavy tanks to help the country resist a Russian invasion, a decision that, according to Russia.
During a telephone conversation with the President of Ukraine Vladimir ZelenskyBritish Prime Minister, Rishi Sunakstressed “the UK’s commitment to step up support for Ukraine, including the supply of Challenger 2 tanks and additional artillery systems,” Downing Street said in a statement.
The government did not say how many tanks it would send, or when and how it would provide training on the use and maintenance of the tanks. Challenger 2.
But British and Ukrainian leaders agreed that “it is necessary to take advantage” of the recent Ukrainian victories, which “repulsed Russian forces.”
Zelensky thanked the UK on Twitter for decisions that “will not only strengthen us on the battlefield, but also send the right signal to other partners.”
Embassy of Russia in United Kingdom reacted to the statement, assuring that the decision would only “aggravate” the conflict.
“The introduction of tanks into the conflict zone will not only not lead to a cessation of hostilities, but will only serve to intensify hostilities, entail new casualties, including among the civilian population,” the embassy said on Saturday.
Support for Ukraine
Since the start of the Russian invasion almost a year ago, Kyiv’s European allies have already transferred almost 300 modernized Soviet tanks, but have never transferred Western-made heavy tanks, despite repeated requests from Ukraine.
