The EU is also monitoring the alignment of the CCU reform with the recommendations of the EC opinion on Ukraine’s application for EU membership.
The European Union supports the reform of the High Council of Justice (HJC) in Ukraine. This was stated in a statement by EU spokesman Peter Stano.
“The recent appointment by the Congress of Judges of eight new members of the High Council of Justice allows this important body of judicial governance to continue its work. The EU fully supports the reform of the GRP and hopes that the positive trend will continue this,” Stano said.
According to him, the EU is also closely monitoring the compatibility of the reform of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine (CCU) with the recommendations of the opinion of the European Commission on Ukraine’s application for EU membership and its compliance with the recommendations of the Venice Commission.
“In particular, the opinion of the Venice Commission, published on December 19, recommends that candidates be rejected for positions in the Constitutional Court based on professional competence, and that the number of the Consultative Group of Experts be increased to seven , with the seventh member coming from the quota of international donors. The European Commission expects that Ukraine will harmonize the law,” said the EU spokesperson.
According to the statement, by introducing these changes, Ukraine will not only advance in the EU membership process, but also strengthen the confidence of Ukrainian citizens in the country’s judicial system.
Recall that the XIX Extraordinary Congress of Judges in Kyiv elected all eight members of the High Council of Justice (HJC) according to its quota.
