A humanitarian disaster is developing in Azovstal. People are running out of food, water and medicine.
The situation in Azovstal has taken on signs of a real humanitarian catastrophe. This was announced on Sunday, May 1, by Deputy Prime Minister – Minister for the Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk on her Telegram channel.
He noted that people in the territory of the Azovstal metallurgical plant are running out of food and water.
“The Mariupol humanitarian operation continues. In the first two days, we evacuated more than a hundred women, children and the elderly from the territory of the Azovstal metallurgical plant. As you know, hundreds of civilians remain blocked in “Azovstal along with the defenders of Mariupol. The situation has taken signs of a real humanitarian catastrophe, as people are running out of water, food and medicine,” he said.
Vereshchuk recalled that repeated attempts to evacuate civilians in recent weeks had not been successful.
“President Zelensky took the situation under personal control. On April 27, the President of Ukraine met with UN Secretary General António Guterres. As a result of the meeting, an agreement was reached on a joint humanitarian operation between Ukraine and the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross.No matter how much the military situation develops around Mariupol, we will fight for each and every one of our soldiers and civilians who remain in the city.The Mariupol humanitarian operation will continue until we achieve our goals – to save the lives of our citizens, “Vereshchuk stressed.
Recall that on May 1, in Mariupol, the evacuation of citizens from the territory of the Azovstal plant began with the support of the UN and the Red Cross. He passed successfully. Thus, more than 100 Ukrainians are now safe – in particular, children, a woman and the elderly. The Azov Regiment showed unique footage of the rescue operation in Mariupol.
